Jan 2009 to Dec 2009

The RESTOFANGS project aims to assist companies carrying out extraction activities in Catalonia to improve the restoration of exploited areas, especially in cases where the quality of the available land is poor (or even barren) and does not guarantee adequate development of the vegetation

One of the main objectives is to develop a technical and administrative protocol to facilitate the use of urban treatment-plant sludge as manure to improve the fertility of the soil used in the restoration. The project is based on the experience accumulated since 1992 by CREAF researchers in quarries where the effects of using treatment-plant sludge in their restoration have been evaluated.
A database associated to the MiraMón® GIS, called RESTOFANGS, is also being created to integrate the management of restoration using treatment-plant sludge, allowing the Administration to control and monitor these measures. In addition to these activities, we are exploring the possibilities of using heat-dried sludge from treatment-plants in the restoration of quarries as an alternative to the wet sludges which are applied at present.
The project is funded by the the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) through an agreement with the Extractive Activities Restoration Section, the Catalan Waste Agency and ACA.
