My name is Martina Gonzalez Mateu and I’m a soil microbiologist. I’m from Argentina, and did my undergraduate in Environmental Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. I then moved to the USA for my PhD at the University of Maryland working on soil microbiology and plant-microbe interactions in wetland systems. I continued with a postdoc at Oregon State University, working on biological indicators of soil health and soil carbon in grass seed cropping systems.

Afterwards, I moved to Switzerland for a postdoc at EPFL where I shifted my research focus studying biofilm bacterial adaptations to climate change in glacier-fed streams in the Alps.

At CREAF, I will conduct my MSCA project ROOTEX-C, with Sara Marañon Jimenez and Josep Peñuelas. In this project I will study carbon stabilization mechanisms in domesticated and wild crops, with a focus on the role of microbial communities in carbon turnover. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, especially in the mountains, as well as baking, and dancing tango.
