My name is Cayetano Herrera. I hold a degree in Biology and a PhD from the University of the Balearic Islands. My research trajectory focuses on applied entomology, with an emphasis on the bioecology of pollinators, pests, and invasive insects. Currently, I am joining CREAF through a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellowship within the Insect Ecology and Pollination research group (GEIP).
My research adopts a multidisciplinary approach integrating molecular tools (e.g., population genetics and metabarcoding), ecological modeling (e.g., ecological niche models), and artificial intelligence for complex data analysis. Through these methodologies, I address key environmental threats such as pollinator health, agricultural pests, and invasive species that compromise crop health and natural ecosystems.
The outcomes of this work are directed toward developing advanced technological solutions and risk assessment tools. These applications aim to protect native biodiversity, strengthen the resilience of the beekeeping sector, and optimize sustainable agricultural production. Furthermore, they seek to provide solid scientific evidence to inform decision-making, support public policy design, and establish effective protocols for biosecurity, early warning, and invasive species management.
