CREAF talks with Natalia Schroeder - Guanacos, livestock, and conservation in the Patagonian steppe: challenges and opportunities at the science–policy interface from the Global South

This seminar will explore how scientific practice is connected to life trajectories, political contexts, and situated realities. Its central thread will be my collaborative research on the spatial ecology of guanacos (Lama guanicoe)—a key species in the Patagonian steppe—along with the challenges associated with their population monitoring and management, and broader debates on nature conservation, approached from a critical, interdisciplinary, and Global South–situated perspective.

This seminar will be given in spanish

Who is Natalia Schroeder?

Natalia Schroeder is a researcher at IADIZA–CONICET and professor at both undergraduate and graduate levels at the National University of Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. Her research interests focus on studies that link nature and society from a critical epistemological perspective. Her current work seeks to understand the dynamics of interactions between wildlife, the environment, and human activities across different socio-ecological contexts and under scenarios of global change. Her research has contributed to the development of population monitoring protocols and best management practices for guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in interaction with livestock in the Argentine Patagonian steppe, as well as to the scientific basis for the development of national and local legal frameworks regulating the use of the species.
