Mammal Atlas
Catalan mammal Atlas
The Catalan Mammal Atlas Project was created out of the need to obtain up-to-date data on the distribution of all mammal species in order to improve their planning and management, as well as that of their habitats. To this end, a citizen science–based project was launched, in which the 386 10x10 UTM grid squares across Catalonia were surveyed over a four-year period (2022–2025).
The standardized field sampling has been based on several complementary protocols: acoustic sampling of bats, camera trapping with motion sensors and diurnal trasects for large and medium-sized mammals, fur traps for small mammals and, finally, marine transects for cetaceans. Details on these field methodologies are available on the website. In addition, the Atlas is working to compile data from various institutions throughout the region, both public and private, in order to centralize the information and obtain an accurate representation of the distribution of mammals in Catalonia. The final result will be the publication of this Atlas in book format.
