From DNA to Territory: A Digital Observatory of Aquatic Biodiversity and a Collaborative Strategy for the Conservation of Pyrenean Lakes

The Pyrenees constitute a biogeographic region of great interest for aquatic biodiversity, given the gradient of climatic and chemical conditions linked to the relief and a highly varied rocky substrate, as well as the orographic barrier to latitudinal migrations. Moreover, they are large enough to host metapopulation dynamics, yet small enough for their study as a whole to be feasible.

In recent years, the number of research groups working on lakes and rivers has increased and, progressively, knowledge has been accumulating, although it remains scattered. The inclusion of molecular techniques in ecological studies has also led to a quantitative leap in the amount of data available and to the possibility of revealing biodiversity that had remained hidden until now.

This is therefore a very timely moment to launch an initiative that catalogues and organizes existing information, linking taxonomy, geography, and previous studies. Such a platform would serve as an information repository and enhance the interconnection between sources of information, while maintaining a network of interactions among experts to ensure that the information remains accurate and up to date.

In this context, CREAF proposes the creation of a BioPortal for Aquatic Biodiversity in the Pyrenees.
