PECBMS 2023-2026
Wild bird indicators for the EU (2023-2026) from PECBMS (Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme)
The implementation of EU biodiversity policy and legislation is assessed through a set of policy-relevant indicators, including EU-level Common Bird Indicators. These indicators help to assess progress achieved under the EU Birds Directive or restoration targets under the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and prioritise conservation measures. Under this contract, our consortium will:
- Provide updates to the species-specific European indices and trends for 170 common bird species.
- Provide updates on three existing Common Bird Indicators (Farmland, Forest and All Common Birds), which will help monitor the impact of the Common Agricultural Policy on farmland and progress towards the proposed Nature Restoration Regulation targets.
- Develop the new Urban Bird Indicator, which will enable monitoring of urban greening under the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
- Develop new flyway-specific indicators for a group of declining migratory bird species.
- Assist the Commission with the publication of the data to make the results available to decision-makers, researchers and the wider public, and publish a scientific paper addressing the methods of production and relevance of bird indicators in the context of biodiversity loss and nature restoration.
