Catalan Living Planet Index (LPI-Cat)

The Living Planet Index in Catalonia (LPI-Cat) is a project of the Observatory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Catalonia, which provides essential information on the state and trends of biodiversity based on monitoring data from wildlife populations. The project is inspired by its global counterpart, the Living Planet Index (LPI), constitutes one of the indicators of the Strategy for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Catalonia and is a reference in the State of Nature Report.

The LPI-Cat and its associated habitat indicators are updated biannually and constitute a key tool for the evaluation of public policies and decision-making in matters of management, conservation and restoration of biodiversity in Catalonia. The project consolidates a unique database and a scientific community that works under shared objectives and methodologies. The project is open to the participation of large-scale and long-term biodiversity monitoring projects.

The project is currently working on several lines:

  • 2026 Update. Since 2018, the LPI-Cat has been updated four times. This year a new update will be made, adding two more years of data to the time series (2002-2025). This update will probably be relevant in the next State of Nature Report.
  • Regionalized indicators. This 2026 is the first time that work is being done on the production of indicators for territorial areas smaller than the whole of Catalonia.
  • The LPI-Cat includes both common and well-distributed species and local and threatened species. The sensitivity of the indicator to the inclusion of species with different degrees of abundance, or size of distribution areas, is currently being studied.
