Marcos Fernández-Martínez receives the 'Ángeles Alvariño' national research award for his contribution in the field of ecology

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) has announced the 2025 National Research Awards , which recognize the most relevant contributions of scientific research in the State. Among the awardees stands out Marcos Fernández Martínez, ERC researcher at CREAF, who has received the 'Ángeles Alvariño' National Research Award in the category of Natural Resources Sciences and Technologies.

The jury distinguished Marcos Fernández Martínez for his “extraordinary scientific career in the study of the carbon cycle and biodiversity , with pioneering contributions that integrate ecology, biogeochemistry and analysis of complex systems”. This recognition highlights the international impact of his research and consolidates him as an emerging reference in the field of global ecology.

This milestone for me represents a great recognition for all the efforts and work that my team, my collaborators and I do. I believe that it highlights the excellence of our scientific production and places it among the best in Spain

More than a prize

The National Research Awards aim to distinguish the career and impact of researchers in different fields of knowledge. They are awarded in 20 different categories and to researchers and, in the case of the 'Àngels Alvariño' award, to young researchers up to 40 years of age who have already made very relevant contributions to scientific progress.

The recognition of Marcos Fernández Martínez highlights the importance of ecological science at a key moment for the planet, and reinforces the need to commit to interdisciplinary research and open science as tools to address global environmental challenges.
