Giulio Zangari
I am a postdoctoral researcher in plant ecology and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Seal of Excellence awardee within the Severo Ochoa framework. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Forest and Nature Conservation Sciences and a master’s degree in Forest Environment Conservation and Restoration. I obtained a PhD in Environmental Biology, with a specialization in applied botany and plant ecology.
My research focuses on analysing vegetation changes in Mediterranean forest and shrubland ecosystems under the impact of climate change. I investigate how species composition and plant functional traits respond to increasing temperatures and water stress, combining field data, long-term climate manipulation experiments, and global data syntheses. I am currently involved in international research projects addressing past, present, and future distributions of Mediterranean forest ecosystems.
The outcomes of my research contribute to a better understanding of ecological change processes and provide practical tools for adaptive ecosystem management, with direct implications for biodiversity conservation, forest planning, and climate change adaptation strategies. In the long term, this work aims to support evidence-based public policies designed to enhance the resilience of Mediterranean landscapes.
On a personal level, I enjoy outdoor activities, particularly spending time in the mountains, and I am strongly interested in science communication as a way to bring research closer to society.
