BlauCat
Estat actual i pla d’acció del carboni blau a Catalunya
The BlauCat project has as its main objective the development of an action plan on blue carbon in Catalonia, evaluating the current situation and the potential for mitigation and adaptation to climate change of coastal ecosystems (wetlands, lagoons, seaweed beds, etc.), also considering their potential for biodiversity recovery.
BlauCat project's general objective is to develop an action plan on blue carbon in Catalonia, assessing the current situation and the potential for mitigation and adaptation to climate change of coastal ecosystems (wetlands, lagoons, seaweed beds, etc.), also considering their potential for biodiversity recovery.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Eurecat, within the scope of the Climate Resilience Center. The Eurecat Team will develop the assessment of the carbon stock through systematic sampling in the main wetlands of Catalonia, while in the case of seaweed beds (macrophyte meadows) it will be adjusted based on existing data and new data that is being acquired through various projects.
The CREAF Team contributes to the assessment and mapping of the restoration potential of coastal ecosystems and agro-ecosystems in Catalonia based on their capacity to mitigate climate change. It will also assess the potential for the provision of other ecosystem services by coastal systems in Catalonia, especially in relation to adaptation to the impacts of climate change (protection against the risk of erosion and flooding), as well as the potential for biodiversity recovery. The joint work will result in a detailed action plan for the restoration of coastal ecosystems in Catalonia to address the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis.
