AlesAules: We learn about pollinators while conserving them
The present project, on the one hand, aims to disseminate key information about the reality and relevance of pollinating insects, their diversity and their state of conservation in the educational communities of different schools. On the other hand, it aims to train the school's own students and teachers to improve the state of conservation of pollinators in their immediate environment.
In general, there is a widespread lack of knowledge in society about wild pollinators — both regarding their great diversity and their key role in the proper functioning of ecosystems and food production. There is also little understanding of how to help conserve these insects.
In this context, the present project aims, on the one hand, to share key information about the reality and importance of pollinating insects, their diversity, and their conservation status. On the other hand, it seeks to empower society to improve the conservation status of pollinators in their immediate surroundings.
To achieve this, we work with several schools to involve the entire educational community of each one. Through a formative process, they become capable of improving the condition of pollinator communities within their school environment (understood as the playground, recreation area, or nearby green space). Moreover, thanks to this training, they can act as promoters of this improvement process in other areas of their municipalities, multiplying the impact of the project beyond the school itself.
