Med Dialogues 2023. A changing Mediterranean climate: when adaptation becomes a priority

CREAF takes part in the Med Dialogues 2023 series conference, to provide a scientific voice in the debate about 'A changing Mediterranean climate: when adaptation becomes a priority'. The 3rd edition of this annual event organized by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Barcelona office of the Club de Roma aim at encouraging debate on the challenges of sustainable development the Mediterranean region faces.

The call aims to emphasize the urgency of the problems regarding adaptation to the climate in the Mediterranean basin. For this reason, it brings together experts, policy makers, activists and stakeholders from various backgrounds, while seeking to facilitate meaningful debates, share knowledge and encourage innovative solutions. The cycle of conferences adopts a territorial approach, addressing adaptation in critical Mediterranean territories such as coastal, urban, rural and maritime areas. Giving voice to recognized experts and actors from both shores of the Mediterranean and from different origins, the Med Dialogues +2030 aim to increase awareness and understanding of the critical sustainability challenges facing Mediterranean countries.

CREAF scientific coordinator Alicia Pérez-Porro moderates the dialogue 'Changing seas: adaptation of the fisheries in the Mediterranean basin' on Wednesday 13th December. The session will count of Nathalie Hilmi, researcher on environmental economics of the Monaco Scientific Centre; Jason Hall-Spencer, Prof. in marine biology and investigator of the University of Plymouth. The closing remarks will be given by Jaume Lanaspa, President of the Barcelona office of th Club of Rome; Roger Albinyana, Managing Director of the IEMed, and Arnau Queralt i Bassa, Director of the Advisory Council for Sustainable Development of Catalonia, Generalitat de Catalonia.

On Wednesday 22nd November, CREAF researcher Jordi Vayreda takes part in the session 'Forests Under Stress: Prospects for Nature Protection and Regeneration' to talk about restoration, conservation, and resilience together with Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat, professor and scientist of the Mediterranean Facility of the European Forest Institute. The session will be moderated by Patricia Carbonell, head of the Barcelona office of Revolve.

On Wednesday 18th October, CREAF Knowledge and Transfer Officer Enrique Doblas moderates the dialogue 'Farming in a hotter climate: adaptation strategies for a resilient mediterranean agriculture', with the participation of Ali  Rhouma, Project officer, responsible  of  the  NEXUS  project of the PRIMA Foundation, and Valentina Mereu, researcher of the IAFES division (impacts on agriculture, forests and ecosystem services) of the Euro-Mediterranean Center of the Climate Change Foundation.
