CREAFTalk by William Anderegg: "Exploring the climate risks to Earth's forests in the 21st century"

Friday, October 7, 2022From 12 to 1 pm

TITLE: "Exploring the climate risks to Earth's forests in the 21st century"

DATE: Friday 7th October 2022.

TIME & FORMAT: form 12 to 1pm CET - In-person and online.

Seminars will combine in-person and online formats (CREAF, Sala Graus II, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain) but in all cases, talks will be always streamed (not recorded), so they can be followed online.

HOW TO CONNECT: direct link to William Anderegg's conference.

SUMMARY OF THE WORKSHOP:

Massive forest mortality events of many tree species in the last two decades prompt concerns that drought, insects, and wildfire may devastate forests in the coming decades. We study how drought and climate change affect forest ecosystems, including tree physiology, species interactions, carbon cycling, and biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks. This research spans a broad array of spatial scales from xylem cells to ecosystems and seeks to gain a better mechanistic understanding of how climate change will affect forests around the world. This talk will explore our recent work aiming to leverage multiple approaches and techniques to quantify the climate risks that forests face and bring this scientific understanding into efforts around nature-based climate solutions.

William Anderegg received his bachelors and Ph.D. from Stanford University and was a NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship at Princeton University. He is the Director of the Wilkes Center for Climate Science and Policy and an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Utah.
