Tree rings have been long used to support decision-making in different fields. Such applications include the: assessment of global warming, II) Drought Atlases from various continents used for water resources management and natural hazard assessment; III) development of frameworks for sustainable logging in tropical and temperate forests; IV) impact assessment of infrastructure development on natural ecosystems, IV) Northern and Southern Hemisphere 14C calibration curves for radiocarbon dating, V) assessment of cultural heritage and societal transformations, VI) authenticity assessment of valuable wooden instruments such as the Stradivarius’ violins, to name but a few. More recently, tree-ring analyses are being employed to support plans and policies in highly dynamic cities, especially in supporting the assessment of climate risk, cultural heritage, environmental pollution, and tree management. All the traditional, more case-oriented, and newly developed applications of dendrochronology in the cities benefit from the massive academic tree-ring community currently found in several countries and on all inhabited continents. In this talk, tree-ring analyses will be presented as a valuable tool available in virtually any city to support evidence-based decision-making.


Dr Giuliano Maselli Locosselli (Center of Nuclear Energy in Agriculture, University of São Paulo, Brazil) has a long experience with different applications of dendrochronology in the tropics, and has recently started to work with trees in the urban environment. He coordinates the FAPESP-funded FUNCTIONAL FORESTS project, focused on ecosystem services and nature-based solutions in the city of São Paulo. This project is part of an International H2020 Consortium on Nature Based Solutions called CONEXUS.
