PREDOCTORAL RESEARCHER FOR WATERSCAPE PROJECT

CREAF is seeking a predoctoral researcher for the WATERSCAPE project (The waterscape as a framework for species coexistence) with reference PID2022-142083NB-C21 funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, the Agencia Estatal de Investigación and FEDER, MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033. The project will aim to elucidate how phylogenetic relatedness is reflected in the coexistence patterns across different environmental gradients. The research is explicitly linked to theoretical ecology developments and aims to provide empirical evidence (observational and experimental) by considering physical and biological components of coexistence theory adjusted to specific field realities. Beyond traditional habitat partitions, the waterscape continuum template (spatially and temporally dynamic water on and within the upper layer of the Earth) will provide the framework for considering the dynamics of species-environment interactions. The project will use high-mountain landscapes as physical settings and diatoms as model organisms. The project will include two approaches of complementary nature: field observations and experiments in the high-mountain waterscapes of the Pyrenees, and laboratory experiments in CREAF and ECAM-UB (Estació Científica d’Alta Muntanya, UB). Diatom community composition will be evaluated using metabarcoding, molecular procedures and bioinformatics will be carried out. A set of numerical techniques merging community and network analysis will be applied. And the integration of experimental data and field observations will be investigated. This contract is envisaged to start in between November to January 2024 but will depend on the moment of the definitive concession*, since there are 3 months (starting on 1st of the month) for start the work contract. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER FOR FORESTSOILORG PROJECT

CREAF is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the FORESTSOILORG project (Do soil organisms enhance stability as disturbed forests regrow in a warming world?) with grant number EC-94191R-22 and financed by the National Geographic Society. By coupling a field study with molecular tools, this project will examine the contribution of soil organisms to the ecosystem C and nutrient balance in a context of climate and land use change at the driest distribution edge of the keystone tree species Fagus sylvatica. By focusing on the role of soil invertebrate fauna relative to soil microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) across contrasting contexts of drought stress and land-use legacies, the project will address two major objectives: (1) to determine the relative contribution of microorganisms and invertebrates to soil organic matter decomposition and formation, and (2) to determine how the soil food web structure influences the magnitude of soil C stocks. This project will provide key insight on the importance of preserving soil biodiversity and function in forest ecosystems. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary working team of researchers from CREAF, IPNA-CSIC and University of Stirling whose expertise encompasses the disciplines of forest ecosystem dynamics, functional biogeography, and soil ecology and biodiversity. The candidate will benefit from the training and career development opportunities offered by team members and CREAF, exposure to international research and constant interaction with other groups at CREAF and elsewhere. The contract will be part-time (2,77H* per week) is offered, with a planned incorporation in October 2023 for a duration of 21 months. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER FOR wildE PROJECT

CREAF is seeking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the wildE project (Climate-smart rewilding: ecological restoration for climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity support in Europe), with Grant Agreement nr. 101081251 funded by the European Commission. WildE's goal is to develop the knowledge needed for a "climately intelligent renaturalisation" in Europe, as a solution based on nature that stimulates the natural capacity of European ecosystems for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and support for biodiversity. CREAF is seeking an experienced, hearted researcher with a strong background in process-based forest and landscape modelling in the Mediterranean and interested in rewilding. This researcher will work in the evaluation and comparison of passive rewilding landscapes, including both long existing and recently passively established forests, in terms of their provision of carbon- and water-related ecosystem services, contribution to biodiversity support and wildfire risk. This comparison will include conducting historical evaluations and future projections considering different climate change scenarios and rewilding and management alternatives, with the final aim to provide guidelines for landscape and forest management to policy makers and practitioners. A full-time contract (37,5 hours/week) is offered with planned incorporation in October 2023, and a duration of 24 month. The contract will be linked to the budgets of the project described above ("scientific-technical activities", according to Law 14/2011). WildE's goal is to develop the knowledge needed for a "climately intelligent renaturalisation" in Europe, as a solution based on nature that stimulates the natural capacity of European ecosystems for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and support for biodiversity. CREAF is seeking an experienced spatial modeller with a strong background in biodiversity spatial modelling to work, together with other European institutions, on building novel future projections of the effects of rewilding strategies in Europe. The CREAF task will evaluate the future spatial dynamics of bird distributions and derived indicators, together with other taxa and ecosystem services assessed by other members of the international consortia. Future trajectories comparing rewilding (recovering of natural processes at the system level) and non-rewilding scenarios will explore IPBES based Nature Positive Futures to assess trade-offs between biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate mitigation and adaption strategies. Together with EBCC (European Bird Census Council), the CREAF team is leading on the development of bird-based indicators that bridge the gap between informing current global change impacts and the evaluation of future scenarios of change allowing the assessment of current socio-political decisions. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN BIRD SPATIAL MODELLING AND CONSERVATION RESEARCH IN EUROPE FOR SPEAR PROJECT

CREAF is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in the SPEAR project (Scenarios for Protecting European Avian Redistributions), with ref. PCI2022-135056-2, International competitive calls, within the framework of "INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION PROJECTS" 2022, funded by the Miniserio de Ciencia e Innovación, Next Generation funds of Euroepan Union, and PRTR (Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia). CREAF is seeking an experienced spatial modeller researcher with a strong background in spatial biodiversity modelling to work, together with other Spanish and European institutions, on building novel future projections of spatially explicit products (Essential Biodiversity Variables, EBVs) aimed at capturing future spatial dynamics of bird distributions under different scenarios at different spatial scales (from subnational to European). These novel projections will explore IPBES based Nature Positive Futures including rewilding (recovering of natural processes at the system level) which aim at significantly contributing to the core of policy relevant information targeting the implementation of the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030. Together with ICO (Catalan Ornithological Institute, https://ornitologia.org/ca/ ) and EBCC (European Bird Census Council, https://www.ebcc.info ), our group is leading on the development of bird based EBVs and derived indicators (farmland, forest and open habitats) that bridge the gap between informing current global change impacts and the evaluation of future scenarios of change allowing the assessment of current socio-political decisions. More specifically, the SPEAR project will compile pan-European data on seabirds, waterbirds, and landbirds to: i) identify potential changes in priority areas for bird conservation at land and sea, including critical gaps in the current network of protected areas in Europe needed to build a Trans-European Nature Network, ii) assess the resilience of European networks to environmental change and identify alternatives that will be robust under future scenarios of threats and pressures, iii) assess the cost-effectiveness of management plans for protected areas that will facilitate adaptation of birds to climate change. A full-time contract (37,5 hours/week) is offered with planned incorporation in September 2023, and a duration of 24 month (with possibility of an extension linked with projects related to scientific framework developed in the SPEAR project). The contract will be linked to the budgets of the project described above ("scientific-technical activities", according to Law 14/2011).
