CREAF Talks: Jordi Bosch

dimecres, maig 30, 2018 15.00 h

CREAF runs an annual programme of seminars that showcase the global research work in the field of ecological science both within and beyond our centre. Each seminar normally lasts 30-40 minutes with plenty of time afterwards for questions and discussion. Seminars are usually on Wednesday at 3 pm.

TITLE

"A world without bees?"

SUMMARY

In the last decade, bee declines and their potential consequences on human well-being have been widely covered in the general media. Often, these reports focus on a single species, the western honey bee, and portray a rather dramatic scenario of the fate of bees, pollination services and food production.

This presentation will attempt to separate fact from myth regarding bee declines. It will provide a general overview of the status and trends of bee populations and analyse the factors responsible for bee declines, including land-use change, agricultural intensification, pesticide use and climate change. Bee declines are clearly the result of a complex combination of factors, some of which are insufficiently known and require further research. Nonetheless, we have enough information to start implementing measures to reverse the negative population trends observed over the last century and mitigate the impact of bee declines.

BIOGRAPHY

I am CREAF researcher since 2007. Before that I was working in USA, in the Bee Biology and Systematics Laboratory (from 1994 to 2001), and in Utah State University (from 2001 to 2003). I went back and became Ramón y Cajal Researcher in Autonomous University of Barcelona (2003-2007).

My research interests are plant-pollinators interactions, host-parasitoid interactions, evolution of flower shape, pollintator communities, crop pollination, bee ecotoxicology, the life cycle ecophysiology of solitary bees, and parental investment.

Our free seminar programme is open to everyone.
